Hump Day Hero: Sophia St. James

April 03, 2013
The CSPH

SSJEvery Wednesday, The CSPH highlights a Sexuality Professional you should keep your eye on. Their backgrounds are very diverse in order to bring attention to the wide variety of amazing people working in the field. This week we bring you Sophia St. James!

1.  What do you do in the field of sexuality?

I am a sexual health and BDSM/kink educator.  I am also a queer adult film star and indie feminist/queer pornographer.

2.  Where are you based out of?

I live in Portland, OR.

3.  What is your focus?  What do you do?

My main area of focus is queer and trans* sexual health.

4.  What are your particular goals and passions in the field?

My main goal is to offer affordable, reliable, honest, up to date sexual health information to my community.  My deep passion for sex/kink education comes from my desire to fill my community with positive information.  To make others informed and knowledgeable so they can have the best information available to make the best choices for their bodies and desires.

5.  Why did you choose to work in this field?

I got my start in healthcare as a nurse 14 years ago.  One of the main areas of interest as a nurse, aside from wound care and queer/LGBTQ care, has always been patient education.  As I discovered my own sexual desires and interests, I started to notice my interest in sex education.  It was something I really never received, and the sex education I did receive was not body positive, nor was it sex positive.  I wanted to offer sex education in a body positive, sex positive, gender inclusive, queer inclusive way.

6.  Where did you go for school/training?

I received my nursing education in the US Army.  I have also taken some additional training at Portland Community College.  My sexual health and kink/BDSM knowledge comes from hands-on experience and on the job training within my nursing career.

7.  Do you have any literature out (websites, articles)?

I recently launched my educational website, ProfessorSophia.com.  I am also a contributor to PQ Monthly, a Portland based LGBTQI publication, and Kinkly.com.

8.  What would you recommend to future professionals attempting to get into the field?

Allow yourself to grow at your own pace.  It may take time to figure out just where you fit, but be patient and have fun learning and expanding yourself.

9.  What is the most challenging aspect for you working in this career?

I find there is so much to be discussed within the sexual health field and not enough time to thoroughly dive into all of it.  The amount of wonderment within kink and sex is endless.

10.  One must read-what would you recommend?  Why?

I would suggest SM 101.  It is a classic and a must read for anyone interested in BDSM and kink play.  Jay Wiseman does a great job in explaining the most basic ‘rules’ of BDSM play for the beginner.
