Starting this week, we would like to dedicate all Week in Review installments for the month to Joani Blank, founder of Good Vibrations, who passed away at the age of 79 on August 6, 2016. We are incredibly thankful for Joani’s life-long dedication to promoting sexual health, education, pleasure, and empowerment; as well as for her work toward creating safe and inclusive sex shops for all consumers.
Welcome to The Week in Review! Every Friday, The CSPH shares stories, reports, and headlines focusing on sexuality, gender, sexual health, sexual politics, and more that we’ve come across during the week. These may be stories we found to be controversial, thought-provoking, or just plain interesting. Without further ado, here is the roundup for the week of September 2nd, 2016!
For starters, have you registered for our SAR yet? This October, we’re hosting a Sexual Attitude Reassessment for folks who are beginning their careers in sexuality, working towards being an Aasect-certified sexuality counselor, therapist, or educator, or looking to deepen their understanding and knowledge base around intersectional sexuality and sexual diversity.
Last week, the Canadian Health Association released a statement urging Canadian blood services providers to alter their policies so that blood donor eligibility is based upon sexual behavior, and not sexual orientation. The statement follows intense controversy surrounding the Canadian Blood Services announcement earlier this year that they would continue upholding Canada’s blood ban for gay men, though they would minimize the requirement for gay donors to abstain from sex to just 1-year (down from 5-years). The organization has also received heavy criticism for what many are calling extremely harmful transphobic policies regarding gender diverse donors.
Artemisia FemmeCock has published an incredibly informative, and detailed review of the POP Ejaculating Dildo; which she states is “the only ejaculating dildo currently on the market that [she] would recommend”. This is in large part due to it being one of the only ejaculating dildo’s that can actually be disassembled and sanitized. Yay!
And finally, if you’ve long struggled with finding a comfortable fit for store bought condoms then you might want to keep an eye out on a new brand launching this fall called myONE Perfect Fit. The company plans to release a total of 56 unique condom sizes to the United States, which they state will include sizes that are much larger and smaller than anything currently available on North American markets.
